Number of Millennials running for office increased in 2020

Following the 2016 Presidential election in which Donald Trump was elected President, millennials have been running for office more frequently. A record number of millennials ran for office in 2020, according to a study from Millennial Action Project.

According to an article by Millennial Action Project (MAP), a bipartisan organization working to promote the election of Millennial candidates, 703 candidates running in November of 2020 were under the age of 45. Additionally, from 2018 to 2020, there was a 266% increase in Millennials running for Congress.

Reilly Rastello, Policy Coordinator at Millennial Action Project, said that he thinks younger voters are hungry for a change in the political scene. This may be why millennial candidates are being elected into office.

According to data from Millennial Action Project, Massachusetts alone had 38 millennial candidates in office in December 2020, and 82 millennial candidates were elected into office in 2020.
